Live, One-On-On Coaching with Stephen

Being a performing human being means you share the same neurology with everyone else sitting in your audience. So why is it that things we do so easily alone or in small groups, sometimes become harder in front of an audience? Stage fright, blank brain, imposter syndrome, getting “the yips”….are all because of how we process fear. Understanding how your brain works is crucial to overcoming these and many other performance problems. Things we were never plagued by when we were small and performed and created naturally without any cares. Imagine going back to that same place but with the mastery you’ve already gained in the practice of your particular discipline! That place everyone knows as “the Zone!” Where time stands still and you’re in the state of flow.

During my 31 years in casting, I presided over close to half a million high-pressure auditions with rank and file actors and academy award winners. At one time or another all of them faced problems auditioning. In order for them get to their best performances, I had to come up with ways to help them reach that state of flow. And the solutions had to work quickly, before they left the room. When someone reached “the Zone,” it was like going from black and white…..to COLOR! Lots of people can “do” performance and I saw no shortage of people doing that to try to get a job. But when someone came in who actually embodied a character to the point of disappearing into that character, that was Rare. I call it “Beingness.” There’s a truth that comes forth when you’re creating from a place so deep inside, you feel yourself almost disappear into the performance and become one with everything around you. The best description of which I know about the act of engaging passionately in something for which you have a love and a talent, comes from the film “Chariots of Fire.” The lead character is explaining to his sister, why he has to run competitively in the Olympics. He tells her, “God made me fast! And when I run, I can feel his pleasure!” Whether you believe in God or not, chances are you embraced your art form because of a pleasure you experience in doing it. It would be my honor to help you find your way to that same passionate place easily and consistently!
